The 1915Çanakkale Bridge, connecting Asia and Europe across the Çanakkale Strait is the world’s longest span suspension bridge with a central span of 2023 meters built in record-breaking time.
Tendered by the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, General Directorate of Highways based on BOT model, the 1915Çanakkale Bridge and Motorway Project has been financed, constructured and being operated by the Turkish-Korean joint venture of Limak, DL E&C, SK ecoplant and Yapı Merkezi.
Besides being an outstanding structural achievement, the 1915Çanakkale Bridge also constitutes a pivotal segment of the transportation network in the Marmara region and provides an alternative route to the Bosphorus passage, diverting traffic from the heavily congested city: Istanbul.
The Project has received 24 international awards including IRF 2021Finance and Economics Award, IRF 2022 Construction Methodology Awards, UNECE 2023 PPP and Infrastructure Award and ENR’s 2023 Project of the Year Award.
The Eurasia Tunnel, which serves on the southern axis of Istanbul to alleviate the traffic congestion, is the first two-deck highway tunnel connecting the Asian and European continents under the seabed. The project allows users to complete the intercontinental journey in about 5 minutes. With an investment cost of 1.245 billion USD, the project covers a total route of 14.6 kilometers including a 5.4 kilometer two-deck undersea tunnel.
With its high technology, advanced engineering, and holistically designed route, the Project has been serving as a ‘Fast’, ‘Economic’, ‘Safe’, ‘Comfortable’ and ‘Environmentally Friendly’ transportation alternative in the Istanbul Bosphorus crossing since 2016.
The Eurasia Tunnel, which is used by more than 70,000 vehicles per day, contributes an average of 200 million dollars to the country’s economy each year as a result of saving 24 million hours of travel time, 30 thousand tonnes of vehicle fuel, reducing vehicle emissions by 13 thousand tonnes, and reducing accident costs by saving 70 million vehicle-km in travel distance.

NAKKAŞ OTOYOL YATIRIM,
KGM has initiated a bid to design, finance, construct and operate the Project with a Build-Operate-Transfer method. Thereby, a contract was signed with Nakkaş Motorway Investment and Management Inc. on 13 April 2021. Nakkaş Motorway Investment and Management Inc. will transfer to KGM all parts of the motorway after a period of 20 years including construction and operation phases.
Otoyol Yatırım ve İşletme A.Ş. (Otoyol A.Ş.) is the company responsible for the planning, construction, and operation of the Istanbul-Izmir Highway, one of Turkey’s largest infrastructure projects implemented under the build-operate-transfer model. The Istanbul-Izmir Highway offers a transportation network spanning 384 kilometers of highway and 42 kilometers of connection roads, creating a total of 426 kilometers.
When including state roads and intersections, the total responsibility area reaches 503 kilometers. This project connects Istanbul, Kocaeli, Yalova, Bursa, Balıkesir, Manisa, and Izmir—Turkey’s most developed provinces that contribute approximately 50% of the country’s economic activities. With the opening of the highway, trade and industrial activities along this axis have accelerated. The Istanbul-Izmir Highway crosses Turkey’s western region and significantly contributes to economic growth and an increase in inter-regional trade volume.
The highway supports not only trade but also tourism. Passing through key tourist regions of Turkey, this highway facilitates access to the touristic centers of the Aegean Region, speeding up travel for both domestic and international tourists. As a result, access to destinations in and around Izmir and Balikesir, where tourism activities are concentrated, has become easier, enhancing the tourism potential of the region.
Key sections of the project include the Osmangazi Bridge, which has a 1,550-meter central span and ranks among the largest bridges in the world, the 3,590-meter Orhangazi Tunnel, and the 2,238-meter Bornova Viaduct.
Additionally, the Oksijen Facilities, operated by Otoyol A.Ş., enhance travel comfort by offering opportunities for rest, shopping, and quality time, while also contributing to regional employment. Positioned at various points along the highway, these Oksijen Facilities are designed to meet the needs of drivers and passengers, especially during tourist travels.
