The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set a target to halve road deaths and injuries globally by 2030. Good road design is a linchpin for achieving this target, creating safer, more sustainable, and resilient infrastructure. The decade to 2021 saw for the first time a decline in global road deaths and injuries, and recent research estimates that more than 700,000 deaths and injuries will have been prevented in road projects that used iRAP tools between 2016 and 2024. But significant efforts are still needed to close the road safety gap by 2030. The UN’s Global Plan for the Decade of Action on Road Safety emphasizes the role of safe infrastructure in eliminating or minimizing risks for all road users, starting with the most vulnerable. The Plan recommends undertaking road safety audits and star ratings on all designs with a goal of achieving a standard of three stars or better for all road users by 2030. The Plan also emphasises the need for speed management and investment. Achieving the SDG target requires a united front.
This roundtable convenes leaders in road infrastructure development to tackle the challenge. Participants will share best practices, strategies, and ongoing projects, along with roadblocks and opportunities to elevate safety in road design globally. The roundtable will seek to align priorities on safe road design as we head toward the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Morocco (February 2025), accelerating progress towards achieving the SDGs.
Roundtable participants will be seated in roundtable in the centre of the room and be invited to speak on specific discussion questions (see overleaf). The session is open to all Congress participants, who will be invited to join the audience, sitting around the outside of the roundtable.
